Dr. Kinmon & Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprain is by far the most common complaint for ankle pain, usually caused by a twisted ankle. Ankle fractures or a broken ankle may also occur from rolling the ankle. Tendonitis is a common overuse injury of the ankle. Ankle arthritis develops in the older population, and is becoming more common with the active adults in our area.

Chronic ankle sprain can lead to ankle instability, which can lead to repetitive ankle sprains, broken ankle (ankle fracture), degenerative or post-traumatic ankle arthritis or osteochondritis dessicans of the talus (osteochondral defect of the talus).

Anti Inflammatory medicines or cortisone shots in the ankle may be helpful for the pain and swelling associated with many painful ankle conditions. Rest or immobilization (below the knee cast or boot) and non-weight bearing might be required. Kyle Physical therapy for the ankle, foot and leg stretching or night splints can help some painful feet. Over the counter or custom ankle braces, or ankle foot orthoses (AFO) can be helpful in many cases.

Ankle Arthroscopy or ankle scope is done through small incision and is minimally invasive. This can help with many painful ankle conditions. Open ankle ligament repair or tendon repair might be required as well. Many ankle fractures require open reduction with internal fixation, or plates and screws for the broken ankle. Arthritic ankles may require an ankle fusion or a total ankle replacement (prosthetic ankle joint).

Recovery from ankle surgery is not as bad as most believe. Soft tissue procedures, such as lateral ankle stabilization only require 3-4 weeks of patient non-weight bearing. If bone is involved, they are in a cast for 6-8 weeks while the bone is healing. Oral pain medicine is usually needed for the first few days, but the horror story rumors of 6 months of pain in bed after ankle surgery are simply not true these days. Patients can get around on crutches or with a walker or wheelchair right away.

Every surgery has risks. Therefore, surgery should always be a last resort. Meaning, all conservative efforts should be tried first. The ankle should be painful to the point that despite conservative treatment it is seriously affecting one’s life before considering surgery. However, in healthy patients success rates for some types of ankle surgery have been reported in excess 90%. Dr. Kyle Kinmon stands for Destroying Ugly Feet, giving a complete educated observation on what steps should be taken next to get you where you need to be.
